The movies are pure magic with suspense of the dimming lights and the endless possibility of a story minutes away from unfolding. This past Saturday, that magic came alive for a group of bright young stars from the Pimville and Mofolo Boys & Girls Clubs of South Africa, as they stepped into a world of dreams and inspiration.
For many of these children, this wasn’t just a trip to the cinema. It was a first-class ticket to new experiences, a chance to dream bigger and a chance to take in a story of courage and hope. With every child receiving a movie ticket, transport and a snack box filled with treats, popcorn and a refreshing drink, the day unfolded like a perfectly scripted film.
The featured film was Hail Mary with Ryan Gosling starring as Ryland Grace who wakes up as the only survivor of his research crew in space. It is a story brimming with science, resilience, determination and the kind of strength that lingers long after the movie is over. As Grace overcomes challenges and attempts to save Earth from the astrophage, the audience was hypnotised. One by one, these students realised that they too can reach for the stars.
This unforgettable outing was made possible by a very generous private sponsor of The Fanaka Foundation, whose commitment to uplifting the youth of South Africa continues to help us create moments that matter. Their support funded a day at the movies and rolled out the red carpet for confidence, hope and aspiration.
Sometimes, all it takes is one Saturday to remind a child that they are the main character in their own riveting storyboard. The sky is the limit!
